Geospatial Mapping and Inventory Surveys
Whether you are a manager or an engineer, managing or working on the highway network, one of the key enablers to help you complete your tasks efficiently and cost effectively is Knowledge; knowledge of what is on the network as well as it current condition and location.
Capturing this information is not always simple and with the increasing number of vehicles using our railways and highways, getting access to the network is becoming harder.
To make this easier Omnicom developed OmniSurveyor3D®, a video surveying system that brings the network to your desktop. By capturing data in this way, organisations can quickly access any section of their network without having to leave the office, in turn reducing the number of site visits and creating savings in cost, time and carbon emissions.
The system is vehicle mounted and surveys are undertaken at traffic speeds and within normal flow to reduce any impact on other users. With its configurable camera set-up, the system can be adapted to meet specific client requirements, including capturing bridge detail. All of the images are spatially referenced to enable asset and infrastructure locations to be extracted.
The supporting desktop application provides the user with a suite of tools that helps them release the value held within the imagery. From the relevant safety and comfort of the office environment users have the ability to:
- create or update asset and infrastructure information to support their Asset Management, Maintenance Management and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the imagery
- undertake accurate and auditable measurements throughout the network, including assessment of bridge clearance
- overlay third party condition data information within the video to provide a visual context to its network location and surrounding environment, especially useful when looking at accident black spots
- generate virtual design layouts of proposed work sites or ‘yet to be built’ infrastructure through the integration of three dimensional models to assist in the generation of Chapter 8 plans and traffic calming
- plan winter maintenance or gritting schemes
- undertake office-based driver route learning
- import the spatialy referenced imagery as series of stills into their GIS or asset management systems
The desktop application is designed to be either stand-alone or networked to provide greater distribution flexibility for organisation.
Those who have invested in OmniSurveyor3D® have identified the following benefits from using the system:
- significant reductions in road-side visits leading to lower fuel costs
- reduction in the use of safety-critical resources and maintenance vehicles
- increased road network safety for employees and contractors
- greater understanding of the network and asset locations
- improved asset and resource utilisation
- greater stakeholder engagement both internal and external
